i didnt tell the family until they had eaten it all, then i told them there was oats in it.... the youngest said he would never eat it again....lol... but he injoyed it while he was eating it, just goest to show to.... dont tell them what you are cooking....;)

    Never ever tell them!

I have always put grated veg in my mince, but only recently started adding oats and lentils, and once I also did a bolognaise with half turkey mince and half beef mince. No one ever notices, and I don't tell!

I did a quick check on mysupermarket and it can be cheaper per kg to use carrots than oats or lentils.

When I'm doing Bolognese or chilli I add onions, carrots, peppers, mushrooms plus the tomatoes. That stretches it out enough for me. I made a SC full at the weekend and got 10 good portions from a pack of mince by adding all the veg.

I made meatballs the other day and used oats to make more balls than the mince would have allowed. I forgot I had done this and didn't tell OH so neither of us noticed.

I'm now going to use oats every time. I always put carrots in my bolognese or cottage pie mixes anyway. This is a simply wonderful idea!

The reason I prefer to use lentils or oats is because you are still adding some protein. Carrots don't add protein.

I add my oats before I even fry the mince - I find it soaks up some of the moisture in the mince which makes it fry much better rather than steam - I hate it when mince leaks a load of water and then cooks in that rather than frying.

If I am not adding oats, I add a tbsp. of flour to the mince before frying for the same reason.
