I wouldn't say it is usual, but as long as you are aware of it beforehand, it would not be illegal.Gone ... or have I?0

I remember when DH did loads of overtime last year, we thought he would have a very healthy paycheck. All of his overtime pay went to taxes, so it was a waste of time.
Sorry I wasn't helpful, your question just made me remember how peeved we both were. :mad:0 -
I've heard of it. If you are working overtime in a lower grade, some employers might pay you the rate of the job you're covering. Mine did it for a while, and wondered why they couldn't get anyone to do the overtime...
But there's nothing legally wrong with paying a different rate for overtime (whether it be less or more than your regular rate) is not unusual - although less is unusual!I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?0 -
wouls have though people should get some enhancement on their normal rate to do overtime (own job) , or at least same rate for a lesser grade.. otherwise its just longer working week.
was the pay less before, or after tax?Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

Not necessarily. Our company got rid of enhancements and upped the basic rate to compensate. Easier to manage budgets. So people who worked just basic hours gained, people who did overtime lost.I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?0 -

That's not a very sensible way of looking at it. Unless you're a higher rate tax payer, you're always going to come away with 2/3 of what you've earned!0 -
Wish I got paid for doing overtime...0

I was doing a normal days work and hours just on a day when i wouldnt have originally been working. The amount ive worked out i based on pre-tax earnings as this is what my normal wage is worked out on (im only part time so dont normally pay tax)
I just thought it was unusual for pay to be less, everywhere else i have worked either payed time and half or the same.0 -

If you're part time and do overtime, it woould be normal to be just paid the normal hourly rate until you've done full-time hours, and then enhancements after that. Otherwise all the full-timers would be part-time and just work overtime at an enhanced rate all the time!I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?0 -
