I used to give my babies dried out sticks of bread to chew on. Just put bread in a low oven until hard and dry.

I agree with thriftlady that toast/ Breadsticks are great for teething. As are any HM biscuits that dont include sugar/salt IMO

Here's my recipe for breadsticks that doesnt use any salt so is great for babies/toddlers.

    Breadsticks Recipe

8 oz strong white/wholemeal bread flour
    ½ sachet/ ½ tsp fast action yeast
    1 oz melted butter
    1 tbsp olive oil
3½ fl oz water (@ room temp)

    Preheat oven Gas 6/220C
Mix flour and yeast in a bowl.
Pour in the oil, water and melted butter. Mix to form a dough.
Divide into 15 pieces and roll to pencil shapes about 15cm long, then place on a greased/ lined tray and bake for 20mins until golden.
Will keep in an airtight box for 1 week.

Cheesy Biscuits Recipe - Makes about 20 small biscuits (theses are a bit like cheese straws)

    50g SR flour
    25g butter/marge
    80g grated mature cheddar
    splash of milk

Mix all ingredients together and knead a little until you have a ball
Roll out to about 2 1/2mm and cut into stars/rounds
Bake at 200c/Gas6 for about 8-10 minutes until they start to colour
They will still be quite soft but they do crisp up a bit more as they cool.

I found this recipe on google but havent tried it:

    Baby Teething Biscuits

    1 cup flour
1 cup dry infant rice cereal with bananas (or other flavored or unflavored infant cereal)
    3 tablespoons cooking oil
    ice water

    Preheat oven Gas7/210C/425F
    Mix flour and cereal.
Gradually stir in oil. Mix a little ice water at a time (start with 1/4 cup) until dough begins to form a ball and pull away from the bowl.
Roll out to the thickness of a cracker on a floured surface and cut into desired shapes.
Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet 10-12 min. or until lightly brown. Cool completely.
Store in an airtight container. (you may want to try 1/2 plain and 1/2 flavoured baby cereal as the taste when using full flavoured baby cereal is very strong!)

I confess I haven't made these yet, but this is the recipie given to me. I've been intending to make these for few weeks now, just run outa time every blasted week!!!

    225g plain flour
    1/2 tsp bicarb
    1tsp cream of tartar
    50g softened butter
    25g sugar (optional)
    50g yoghurt
    65ml milk
1/2 beaten egg (I know, I think you can freeze the other half or make double quantities)

Sift flour with bicarb and cream of tartar
Cream butter with sugar (if using) and gradually stir in flour
Work mixture until resembles breadcrumbs by hand or with electric mixer.
Combine youghurt, milk and egg, add to flour mixture, stiring till it forms a dough. Knead it a little with your hands.
Take walnut sized piece of dough, roll it into a finger shape and flatten it slightly.
Put them on a greased baking sheet and bake 20 mins at 180 for 20 mins, then lower temp to 120 for another 15-20 mins to dry out. Cool on wire rack.

Gotta say my 9 month old is very partial to a malted milk biscuit as a treat!

    Hi there,

When I was anticipating DD teething I bought those expensive teething sticks (can't recall what they were called) .. but a total waste of money for us.

I know you're asking for recipes for similar .... but what worked for my DD was cucumber batons and carrot sticks .... cold seemed to soothe more for her.

    Good luck :)

I used to chill a clean damp flannel in the fridge and DS1 seemed to enjoy sucking on the corner of it when his teeth were coming, cold defo helped him. We also found having a dumy to bite on helped, though I know a lot of people don't like to use them. We did have a heck of a job weaning him off it!

My 8mo is addicted to the cow and gate bear biscuits but at £1.58 per pack per week I would like to find a cheaper alternative if possible - it has to be something that disintergrates fairly easily 'cos the little 'un has not grown any teeth yet and has to gum them to death :) Any recipes/ideas please...
  • Haven't got a recipe any more I'm afraid but I used to bake really hard biscuits for my babies to chew on when they were that age. I think I got the recipe from US website. Try some parenting type websites. All I remember was that the biscuits tasted nice and were rock hard, so they could gum them for hours!

    Hi debbym,

There's an earlier thread with some recipes that might help so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

  • I was wondering if anyone has a recipie for bickipeg style biscuits that i could make for my 5mo DD who is currently teething. As it's for a baby i would like it to have no added salt or sugar however still have a flavour to it (dunno maybe have added fruit/veg to it to give some flavour)

For those who do not know bickipegs are very hard rectangular biscuits designed for teething babies as they are virtually unbreakable.

It needs to be something that is simple to prepare as i'm not a very good cook and something that can be kept fresh for a while (i'm thinking about a week)

    Many thanks

  • Maybe if you Google "South African rusks" recipe you might find what I have in mind. They're not really used as teething-rusks, more like a breakfast thingy, they're exceptionally good for dunking but are slow-baked and as hard as rocks. A SA friend's Mum made some, I've asked for the recipe but I'm still waiting.
