Footprint on Credit record....

Hello
We made an appointment with Nationwide to discuss a new mortgage next week and whilst on the phone the member of staff asked a few details prior to making the appointment: DOB, Address time at address etc.
Thought nothing of it at the time, but I went onto my Experian account today and noticed that Nationwide have left a footprint on my credit record.
It seems a bit strange as we have already had offers from BOS and A&L but neither of these have left a footprint, we have not even discussed our mortgage needs with Nationwide yet.
Sooooooo the question is : Is this normal practice or some new pre-screening policy that banks have now adopted?????

Ta in advance wise people....

1 Some lenders do what they call a 'soft' footprint, this means they do a credit search to obtain an 'Agreement in Principle' but it is not registered as an application so no footprint, it would only be registered if you decided to apply through them with a full mortgage application.
2 Unfortunately not all lenders use or want to use this system, so when shopping around ask if they leave a footprint as could affect your credit score.
3. Nationwide should have explained that they would be doing a credit search and MUST obtain your permission before doing so. If they have not this is a bit naughty and as you say they are probably trying to vet all appointments before they come into the branch.I am a Mortgage Adviser .You should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
