Anyone had the wedding at their own house to keep things simple, either the reception or the full thing including the ceremony(scotland only).I would be interested to hear how it went.

My OH's parents have a huge garden which is big enough for us to have had the reception there but there's nowhere close by to get married! Which meant that we'd have to hire a bus to get everyone around from place to place - not really ideal and the cost of a marquee was expensive too. Depending on how many people have been invited, you'd probably want to consider hiring mobile toilets too!
My cousin had her evening reception at home and it was lovely, a very warm evening and they did all the food themselves. Perfect if you can guarantee good weather!“I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”

We are having our wedding reception here at home. We have a guest list of 70 and will be having a couple of 6m x3m gazebos in the garden. Stil way cheaper than hiring a place and everyone is so much more relaxed at home.

My cousin had her reception at home but her parents are loaded so they had a big posh marquee and outside caterers in (they basically took over the kitchen). It was a gorgeous day but I think I'd want something simpler if we had one at home. This cousin's younger sister got married a couple of years later and had the reception at a stately home, my uncle said it was much less stressful.Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

we're having our reception at my mum & dads, and weirdly we are bussing people to and from the ceremony, mainly cos a lack of parking once you are there.Nonny mouse and Proud!!

Any more backyard brides?
I have put a deposit on a venue but I am still interested in looking at cheaper and easier options,I can still change my plans.Being in Scotland and getting married in November our wedding would be inside, has anyone had a winter wedding at home.I suppose we are lucky to have the space inside.
We are having a humanist celebrant do the wedding so easy to change the venue to home.
I guess it may not really be cheaper as I would probably want to redecorate the whole house and put in a new kitchen for the event.
I just think it would be nice to have a ceremony in front of our big fireplace in the main lounge and we have room for a party in the dining room.
How does this sound?
Ceremony in the front lounge while the caterers are getting the dining room ready. The string quartet would fit in the big bay window space and we can have champagne and canapes before dinner. Then through to the dining room for a 5 course dinner.
The seating can be moved aside in the main room during dinner and can be used for a pary afterwards.Any big bits of furniture can go upstairs out of the way until after the event.
We can have fireworks out the back and are close enough to the big park to see the annual council run fireworks display too.
Its easy for everyone to get to and cheap to get taxis home for everyone. We could farm the kids off to grandparents to have the night alone and go on honeymoon that weekend. We could even leave the dogs at home with grandparents.
Our current wedding plans are costing us £7k and rising but I could spend the money on the house and get wed at home. What do you think?"Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0 -
Just thought, theres a bit of a party at the local park on our wedding date,5th Nov,with live bands,a fun fair and obviously a big fireworks display. The weather here is always so cold and wet here on 5th though and we always get covered up past the ankles in mud at the park.Do you think it would be weird for a wedding party to don wellies and go to a public event as their wedding reception entertainment?Would I get ribbed if I show up in a wedding dress?"Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0

if you normally go and enjoy it then i think it would be fab - only problem is it might ruin your wedding dress? people will be more likely to cheer than rib you for turning up in it. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-09

Will you be able to see the firework display from the castle? Then you can have the best of both....gorgeous dress in the castle, AND fireworks courtesy of the local displays!0

We have decided on the castle.Having it at home would,be cheaper but money isnt everything.
We are travelling quite a distance to the castle. My 1st choice venue was the local castle but they dont do weddings. We wont have fireworks because its in the middle of farming land(dont want to scare the animals),but we are having sparklers and eco lanterns instead which will probably be even better.I wanted all white ones and hubby2b wants the rainbow coloured ones.
We can see the fireworks display every other 5th Nov just not that one."Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0 -
We've finally decided to have the reception at my parents house! So now I'm looking for a good deal on a marquee!0
