Have you tried powering the laptop with only the power supply connected and the battery removed?

That small clicking sound may indicate a problem with the hard disk...and may need someone to look at it.

doesn't sound good, is it still under warrenty ?
If the hard drive is gone there are ways to boot using a CD/ floppy etc but probabbly best to get someone (a trsuted local shop or Sony) rather than the likes of Pc-world

yes clicking noise is normally associated with Hard disk failure, although I would not expect it to go after a year

only other possible source is the power socket if its on that side of the laptop, may have come loose from the mother board

thanks for your replies, so how do I figure out whats wrong? shall I plug in from mains and take battery out and see what that does? - what am I looking for?

Its just run out of warrenty and they are gutted as they paid £800 for it! so its not a virus or the fan (do they have fans?) being dusty etc...

    Thanks x

looking at some pictures of the Sony Vaio the hard disk seems to be in the middle

    lap4.jpg

bottom right is normally the area where the cd/dvd drive is , which may expain the clicking , if the hard disk has failed it will attempt to boot from the CD

if this is only a year old I would expect them to fix it even if they claim otherwise, it really should last more than a year !!

I would remove the battery first and try and power up from the mains only

For it to turn on! :p

If it's 'just' out of warranty, it is worth giving Sony a call anyway. They are pretty understanding from my experience (depending on who you speak to of course).

But before you do that, find out if your friend has registered the laptop in the first place. They may not have, in which case you can possibly back-date the purchase date by a month or so to a time that falls within warranty.

I've done that a few times on occasions like this!

    thanks for that browntoa

so I will try that, and if that fails too shall I try and put one of their cds (recovery or whatever!) in (they are really worried as they have baby photos on there)

To the OP, when you say "won't load up", do you mean the operating system does not load and a clicking? Or you get nothing at all on the screen and a clicking?

I would take my laptop over with me and ask you whilst I am there but I prob won't know how to conntect to the web there?!
