Which banks are 'respectable'?

Hi,

I will soon be receiving about £48,000 in a redundancy payment.

As I want to find other work almost immediately, I am looking to invest as follows;

£3,600 Cash ISA
£3,600 Stocks/Shares ISA

£25-30,000 in a 'no touch' high interest savings account.

How do I know that any bank where I put my money will be safe, as I haven't even heard of a couple before, and they appear to be based abroad - IceSave , for example - although I have seen them advertising in the Mail On Sunday Financial sction so I'm guessing that they would be ok.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Steve
