MILK & YOGURT - CAN I GET IT CHEAPER???

  • My boyfriend thinks I'm weird for having a milkman still. Apparently paying 3p extra a pint is an extravagance!!!!

I love having a milkman - where-ever i've lived in the UK from Lpndon to Birmingham, I've always managed to find a milkie. Had to get up early in some places(Portsmouth) to avoid it getting nicked in the morning though, and the odd one still goes walkies here  .

I have 2 boys though - one of whom loves milk, and we still only use a pint a day??? Cereal in the am + my coffees +glass of milk for him. I do fork out for milk at school for them both as well.

  • 5 of us get through about 30 pints per week. I always keep some powdered milk in but I havent managed to find any that is not skimmed so far-which was one of the points in the original post. I also keep a few cartons of longlife UHT in store-kids dont like the taste but if its mixed with S/s when you are down to your last couple of pints, its not bad. food enough for coffee anyway and I swear by it for yoghurts.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Curry Queen, I didn't take your comments as critisism, far from it. I have been concerened about the amount they drink, especially my eldest daughter, she would live on it if she could so far from being unwanted your comments are gratefully received :T I wasn't aware of the porper guidelines before now, my health visitor has always said a pint of full fat a day until they are 5.

I also keep some UHT in the cupboard for those days its rainging or I have no cash on me for the shops, its handy stuff.

Must get on now, kids to dress, dishes to do..............................

I can also easily get through that much milk in a week with a family of five. HM puddings, custard, yoghurt, sauces, sponges, yorkshire puddings etc all require milk. The more you cook yourself and the less you buy ready made the more milk you will use IMO. I would be more concerned about my kidz consuming loads of squash, pop, sunny d than a pint or two a day of the 'udder stuff' .:D

  • No you can't buy milk any cheaper.

The farmer is paid about 19p per litre of milk he produces. If you do the sums, you can see that it can't be produced any cheaper.

However, if the supermarkets were willing to forego some of the obscene profit they make on this basic food, that might be different ;)

  • They only get 19p a litre??
you are right....the profit the supermarkets IS obscene!

Yup - here's the "farmgate" price for milk. Note, that UK dairy farmers receive the lowest price for their milk, in the EU

Its much the same in NZ, dairy farmers are being pushed out of business by greedy supermarkets etc. They get paid per litre and also by how much fat content there is. The bottom line though is that they are ripped off BIGTIME.
