I often make hummus but getting hold of tahini paste is getting difficult and expensive - don't know why but it is
.
Anyway - how essential is it in making hummus? I can't stand it myself but DH and the kids love it and I don't want to have to remove it from the menu.

It certainly does make it taste authentic. Having said that, you could try substituting a slosh of sesame oil in place of it - how much (if any) cheaper that might be though I wouldn't like to guess. In the past when I've run out of tahini I have thrown in a handful of sesame seeds and blended them with everything else - rather nice as they don't entirely blend smooth so you get a nice "sesame" taste.
For mine I use:
Tin of chick peas
heaped teaspoon of Tahini paste
heaped teaspoon of Plain yogurt
Slosh of olive oil
slosh of lime juice
Blend until smooth. If it's too thick I add a little more yogurt.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

Thanks SO much for that recipe - the one I use says 2 TABLESPOONS of tahini, so 1 teaspoon would make a jar go a lot further. Never thought of adding just sesame seeds, I have a bag so I'll try that too.
Thanks again - appreciated :beer:People Say that life's the thing - but I prefer reading

You're welcome! It's not anything I've ever got from a book, just something I've developed over the times I've made it. I sometimes use lemon juice instead of lime, and also occasionally add a few dried chilli flakes to give it a bit of bite.

I stopped using Tahini as I don't make hummous that much (only I eat it) and it tends to go off. Instead, I use some sesame oil (which I have for chinese cooking) some olive oil, garlic clove and some sesame seeds (I got a huge bag of toasted ones in the health food shop) whizzed up in small food processor before adding chick peas, lemon and salt/pepper.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
