Hi all,
ive had a letter from meritforce threatening an authorised collector visit.
for a debt im sure is near 6 years old.
now this wouldnt normally bother me but the thing is ive recently moved house and the letter is addressed to my old address.
(ive done the re direction with royal mail).
so should i get in touch to advise my new address?because i wouldnt want anyone turning up looking for me at my old address.
obviously i dont want to make contact with them but in this case i think i need too.

If you aren't sure what the date of last payment was on this debt (and you have not written to them acknowledging the debt) I would personally be tempted to send HBOS a subject access request. This would make them send all the information they hold on you including account transactions. This would then enable you to see when the last payment was.
With regards the "authorised collector visit", it's some guy that might knock on their door and ask for money. They do not always send someone round to the house and they have as much legal right to enter a property or remove goods (or do anything) as the paperboy. NONE.
I would wait until i knew the dates of the last payment before doing anything. If you try to see your credit history report to see if the debt has a CCJ (or Decree in Scotland), when you provide your name to the credit reference agency, debt collection agencies (DCA) will be able to get it so there may be another hurdle to overcome later.
As it is a credit card, you could request a copy of the customer credit agreement (CCA) from the DCA. If they are unable to provide this, then the debt is not enforcable outside of court.
One thing though, a debt is statute barred after 6 years in England. In Scotland it is 5 years. Not too sure where you are based, but it may make a difference. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
Dad Gift 6k ¦ Savings & Inv Tst: £2,500
Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0
Total Owed: £2,270 (+6k) 11/08/20110 -
