Eek again.
I don't want to sound too negative here but... be prepared for bad news at your local computer shop. Unless they are very good they can't do a lot more than you've already done.
If you are getting hardware errors then they probably will too, so be prepared to be told that the hard disk has failed and that nothing is recoverable.
Sorry - hope I'm wrong about that...0 -
Well I have managed to rescue a number of my pictures (some were still on the memory card, and I managed to rescue a few others from another memory card by using "freeundelete"), so i figure all is not lost! They are after all only photos :They can't take the holiday away from us, we still have our memories if not all our photos! (though I will of course immediately back up/ copy in future!)
So I would be interested in what you make of the following message, as it will help me decide which route to take... if it's likely to be a software problem I will go to the local computer shop and see if what he can rescue.
If it's a hardware fault I will take it back to the store, as it's still under guarantee.
Sorry, its a long message but here goes:
cannot mount volume. Unable to mount the volume
ntfs_attr_pread:ntfs_pread failed: input/output error.
Failed to read NTFS $bitmap: input/output error. NTFS is either inconsistent or you have hardware faults, or you have softRAID/fakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chsks/f on windows then reboot into windows TWICE. The usage of the /f parameter is very imporant! if you have softRAID/fakeRAID then you must first activate it and mount a different device undr the /dev/mapper/directory (eg /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1) please see the "dmraid" documentation for details
its like a foreign language to me, but the words "hardware fault" do leap out, but as i say, it's not the end of the world as at least it is still under guarantee
Thanks0 -
It's possible that the failure of the battery has merely left the disk in an 'inconsistent state', in which case you could borrow a Windows XP setup disc from someone, boot from it, enter the Recovery Console and run chkdsk with the /f switch.NTFS is either inconsistent or you have hardware faults, or you have softRAID/fakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chsks/f on windows then reboot into windows TWICE.0
