What does debt free feel like??

As the title says,

What does debt free feel like ??

For so long, over 20 years I've had debt problems and I didn't know it. Over the last 3 years I have known about it and began doing something about it but hassle from creditors, lack of money, fights with the wife and son, no holidays, food or anything else. Court battles, harrasing phone calls, threats, continually fighting against the current ney torrent and sometimes thinking that it would be easier to let it all slip away wishing that the torrent would flow over the head once and for all has become the norm.

Anyway, I'm in a position now to have reduced my debts a bit.... see sig tag for details and although there is a bit to go I feel that the end is in sight but I don't feel anything, nothing, zip, nada. In fact I feel quite depressed and have had many sleepless nights over the last few months because I would be and now am able to pay off some debts.....

I did think that I'd be jubilant, extatic, happy, and carefree again ( not with money I hasten to add) but nop, nothing but a seemingless emptyness inside.

So the question is, for those who are debt free what does it feel like and for those who want to be what do you think it will be like?

I'm debt free and haven't really been in debt, but have lived in poverty. Strange thing was that when i started earning money and my quality of life could improve, i just wanted to save it incase i went back to living in poverty. Also you've got to remember that being a dfw isn't just coming on this board, its a way of life and by tackling your debts your whole attitude to life has changed. Its not a switch that you'll turn off when you become debt free and to be honest nor would you want to. I think its like a lot of things, its more of a process. There will be that warm feeling that you can actually pay for something rather than having to worry about it getting you further into debt. For me being debt free is a case of living like i was in debt, because even though i don't have debts the only way i don't is to keep living a frugal life.

Perhaps you need to ask yourself what it is about becoming debt free that is causing you to feel down and have sleepless nights.

sorry if i have waffled instead of answering what you wanted.
