i'm think i'd like to grow my own veggies but have no idea where to start.
I have plenty or room in my garden any ideas?
I would have to grow something that would be ok in the wind. i live on the isle of lewis in scotland and sometimes not always it can get windy here.
please give me a point in the right direction. Maybe a book you could recommend or a web site.
thanks in advance

decide what foods you use a lot of/like to grow...
we started with herbs (thyme, rosemary, parsley etc). they can cope outside all year round (parsley in sheltered area).
then soft, fruit/veg such as tomatoes, strawberries etc
and now hanging baskets, troughs etc
things grow best where it is warm and light, so look round your house garden and pick the most sheltered, warmest places and put soft fruit etc there and the most rugged or wind-swept areas the more hardy (such as herbs, potatoes etc) plants.
good luck! What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots0 -

You dont say where on Lewis you are but I am sure that if you ask around your neighbours or even the postie, what veggies grow well in your part of the island you will get a better response than from any book that is published on the mainland. I have no doubt there will be a community council of some kind locally and they have their fingers in all sorts of things so they would be worth contacting as well.
As for what to grow, as has been said, grow what you will eat, tatties, carrots, onions, turnip and leeks are all good fare and if you are in any doubt about the soil you might like to try some stuff in containers.
Good luck0 -

Go for produce, Loulou, that will keep you going in the winter. Leeks, parsnips, potatoes, carrots, turnips, swede and perpetual spinach.
And raspberries are a specialty in Scotland something to do with light levels at the right times.0
