Did you do a "postcode" check beforehand to see if freeview is available in your area? Freeview can be "fussy" and you need a good aerial to pick up all the channels. You could try buying an aerial booster, worth getting from Argos as you can take it back if it doesn't make things better. If this doesn't improve things you may need a new outdoor aerial.

is there a signal strength meter on the tv? I had freeview in the front bedroom here, it was fine on an indoor aerial, moved to the back room and cant get ITV Ch4 etc. either, maybe someone else will know more about it.

Yes it is possible that the tv is knackered. But equally it is possible that you have not got the right aerial for freeview. Really you have to make up your mind on that one. If it's the aerial, you will waste your time and the shops' time if you proceed as though it was knackered.
After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?
