HELP - I've spent it!!

Hi all, first time poster here so if I'm in the wrong place, apologies.
18 months ago I cashed in some freebie shares from the A&L who also advised that we had 10 years of unclaimed dividends to come also. We spent the total money on a trip to Oz and upon our return another cheque was waiting for a different amount, also for unpaid dividends.
As the figure was different from the 1st cheque and the backing paperwork not particularly clear, we spent this too.
A few weeks ago, A&L wrote to say they had sent the second cheque in error and wanted it back (c£500). Obviously I wrote back saying it was outrageous, didn't have the cash, it was their error etc. The best so far is a £50pm repayment for 10 months.
Am I bang to rights here or can I keep arguing til they go away?
Any help, experiences would be gratefully received.
Thanks

I think you will have to repay the money. If you do not they will probably go to the CC. However, I would suggest you pay the money back over a certain period. Just over a year at GBP40pcm sounds OK.In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0
