I have some jewellery that I don't wear and was thinking that I could possibly sell some of it to bring in some cash. I've tried in the past going to jewellers but they would only give the value of the weight in gold. The price they gave me was ridiculous given what they originally cost. Has anyone ever done this or could give some advice of the best way to do it?

Hi DD.
I once went to a jewellers to get some jewellery valued with a view to selling but as you say they offer peanuts.
Have you checked out what price similar pieces to yours are fetching on the likes of Ebay? If you don't have many pieces and they are worth a bit and you don't want to let them go for a song on Ebay, it might be worth you getting a valuation certificate from a jeweller. There are 2 types of valuations, value for sale purposes and value for insurance purposes. I'm guessing that the valuation for insurance purposes will be considerably higher than the for sale one. I'm guessing that if you have a valuation cert you may have a better chance of getting what you want for the pieces if you choose to Ebay them.
Hope that helps.
