Help - have I left it too late to submit online??

Hi there.

Does anyone know how long it takes to get your activation pin from the IR to enable online submission of self assessment tax returns? I haven't been very organised and only registered today to submit online and it said it would take 7 days for an activation pin. This would obviously send me over the 30 sept dealine. I really don't want to have to calculate my own tax so I guess I will have to submit a paper copy instead, although I'd rather do it online.

I am sort of hoping someone will tell that it really only takes a couple of days to come through the post!

Thanks for your help.

(panicing slightly) Sarah

    per IR self assessment FAQs

What is the significance of the 30th September deadline?

The 30th September deadline has no significance for customers who send their Tax Returns online, as you will automatically have your tax calculated for you. If you are a PAYE taxpayer and your Tax Return is filed online by 30th December, we will collect any tax due that is less than £2,000, through your PAYE coding in the year commencing on the following 6th April.

    ... so don't panic.

You probably will not get it by 30 Sept, but don't panic! If you submit your return on-line, they will calculate it for you automatically. If you really want to leave it to the very last minute, do it in January 2006 and make sure that you pay what is owed in full by 31 January. Thus can be transferred on-line (assuming you have the money in your bank account!).

Remember, just one day later than Jan 31st and it will probably be an automatic £100 fine.

My previous advice assumed you are self-employed.
  • Can somebody help me please? I filed my End-of-year return on-line in April on the promise from Inland Revenue of £250 as an incentive to do so. I've still not received my £250 and whenever I ask them, their standard reply is "The information we have is that letters will be going out in two weeks".

I've even had the reply "ahh, but we didn't say WHEN you would get it". This is the kind of response I would expect from a shady second-hand car dealer (apologies to any non-shady second-hand car-dealers reading this). Can anybody tell me what I can do to get my money?
