Where can I buy a cheapish pump to pump something out?

I need to get a cheap pump to pump out an underground tank full of water. I don't know exactly how it'll work but I assume it's a hosepipe in the tank and the other end to the place it's going and somehow a pump doing the work. It might only be used once so I don't want to spend a lot on it, and it doesn't need to be powerful - slowly is fine as long as it does it. Anyone got any suggestions on where I can get one? Thanks.

    Ummm, thank you mountainchrisriver.

I've looked at pumps. I obviously need a dirty water, submersible one. I drop the pump into the tank, it's got a whatever meter lead from the pump, lead goes into extention cable to power in house. Pump has a hosepipe type thing from pump to place it is to go. Ok, I understand what I need, just anyone got any recommendations for where ? Plus the cheap element !
  • Sorry I was suggesting syphoning off the water... hence no pump required... hence the slightly strange link... not sure if it is possible... :o depends on how deep the tank is etc... but may be worth a try... how much water we talking here?

Other than that have you tried screwfix for a pump... they are usually fairly reasonable....

Depends on how much water you're talking about. When I had a similar task I just bought a small pump that cost about £5 and fitted it onto the end of an electric drill. Put a hose pipe on either end, locked the drill switch on and it cleared the water in no time.

When you look for a pump make sure it can pump the height you need to get the water out. This is called the pump "head" some pumps can give high flow but no pressure hence are low head pumps. Better to check than buy something that doesnt do the job!

Bought one from Screwfix that did the job perfectly. Wonderful inventions !! It's now sitting in the shed on stand-by for the next emergency.
