Which company do I pay?

Hi,
I have recently received a letter from a debt recovery company(a) about a debt I had years ago, on behave of the original company(b). They are now asking for around £400.
I have sorted through my old letters with the original company(b) this debt was with and I only owed them £80. Why I didn't finish paying them I don't know. My silly younger days!
I have contacted the original company(b) and can pay off the £80 and close the case. My only concern here is that this would not be the end of it and the other company would then be still looking for the £400. Yes it is for the same store account card.
Hope you can give some helpful advice please.
Cheers
Eva

it is possible that as you stopped paying one company after a certain length of time with a DCA if no payment is made it gets sent back to the origional creditor, then they either pass it to another and add charges or sell it
now if the 1st DCA has closed the account, then its normaly not possible for them to collect on the debt
I understand the concepts of cooking and cleaning
........ I Just dont understand how they apply to me!0
