Although the expression is a bit harsh, actually it is a fair point to at least consider. The OP has not flatly denied the loan, so it could be a genuine debt?

We dont have any social payments, all we get is child benefit. I am not sure if they can touch this

I have a feeling they can't because it is paid for the benefit of the child, not you.

National Debtline (who wrote the factsheet) should be able to tell you for certain. Tel: 0808 808 4000. Monday to Friday 9am to 9pm - Saturday 9.30am to 1pm.

If they can't recover it through the courts or deduct it from benefits, then it's entirely up to you what you do.

If you can't remember for certain whether the debt is real, then it may be worth doing some digging. It wouldn't be the first time DWP have pursued the wrong person.

I had a letter a few months back that gave me a week to pay the 14 pounds i owed them from 6 years ago. I had forgotten i had left the 14 pounds outstanding. So i rang them up and they gave me full details of time loan was taken out and how much i had paid back. So it was right i owed the money.
I asked them why they had taken so long to ask me for the money.
They just said it can take sometime. Any way i arranged a date for me to pay it, which was four weeks later. They said i could make a plan to pay it if i wanted. But i didnt want to with only 14 pounds to pay.
But if your wife rings up on monday and asks them when she took loan out and how much she has paid off they will tell her. Then ask to make an arrangement to pay and they will set up a way to pay monthly.
This might be a bit better for you even though you can afford to pay it.

thanks for all your advice. Sheis going to investigate the debt on monday, and if it is bonafide, we will just pay it anyway. I may look at doing it monthly as it is interest free. Tenner a month hopefully should be fine. I phoned dwp and she mentioned how this is interest free as the government want to help out the needy, so its only fair that we pay, as my wife must have been needy when she took it out, and now we are fortunate to be doing ok.
