Anybody work in the I.T sector - need some help!

hi there
im planning a move itn the I.T sector
it seems the first role is always something along the lines of a
service desk analyst
any ideas what is involved in this role??
ok there is the basic but i guess this is the basic support role, any where onlien any sites that can also help me, what troubleshooting is normally carried out.
such as printer issues, internet connectivity issues, OD issues, active driectory, novell netware?
any advice at all?
please note im not movign to the role or applying yet but plan to do soon but want to do research first.
at the moment im struggling to find the funding to pay for mcse courses (i dont think i really need them myself but companies do look for them)

where i work the first level mainly deals with password resets, access problems or they log the job and have someone else deal with it0 -
I'm working as an IT Support Analyst, in second line help desk support, alot of what you've described is what I do password resets, account creations, printer installs, operating system installs and hardware upgrades, software support and bug fixing using everything from office to adobe suites everything you can think of.
Were also in charge of all the servers e.t.c ie doing the tape backups and server upgrades and daily maintenance and were also involved in project looking to upgrade current systems and hardware software e.t.c. if you want any more info etc feel free to pm me0 -
First thing don't bother with doing the MCSE. IT's way over what you need for a desktop support\helpdesk\support analyst job. You would save money and a lot of grief by doing something like the CompTIA A+ or the Microsoft Certifed Desktop Support Technican (MCSDT). And while employers do look for certification, you need to remember that almost always these ads have been drafted by someone in HR who will almost blindly jot down MCSE, CCNA certs etc, as being a mandatory requirement for the job.
As for what you would normally do, BBenson has pretty much got it bang on. All i would add to that is that you would probably have to support some mobile platform, whether that be PDA's or Blackberry or both.

Opps forgot we have blackberrys and some noklia communicators as well.
Qualification wise Ive got a BND IT Practitoners, & a CCNA was going to do a CCNP never got round toi it and happy I didnt as in all honestey Its not needed, Ive found that everything I learny on my CCNA has thus far been useless as we have outsourced and got someone else to manage are routers and switches.
I guess this all depends on the size of the business you work for, the smaller ones will prob. have people in house do it whereas large businesses will prob do either or.0 -
Most big IT operations are now largley outsourced. Been there and done that, both being outsourced and as a contractor working for an outsourceing company.0
