GARLIC!!!
Eat lots of garlic to stave off colds (and other people)
My Mum eats bucket loads of garlic and eats loads of fresh food, I don't remember her EVER having a cold or being ill at all.Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
Agree - lot's of garlic is a great way to prevent colds (also a great way to prevent romance!) - apparently chewing fresh parsley helps with the whiff factor though. The other alternative is a capsule called Allimax (Boots often has these on buy 2 get 1 free) - it's made from Allicin extracted from garlic.
If you already have a cold then a good homemade chicken soup does wonders (made from a whole chicken or carcass + it's giblets if you can get them )"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the

of everything that comes along their way."

The basic de-tox idea is to eat no processed foods. Lots of fruit & raw vegetables, brown rice, no caffeine, alcohol or refined carbohydrates.
If you normally drink a lot of coffee beware of caffeine withdrawl, it can be nasty!
When I feel a bit "bleurgh" (you all know that feeling) I make a huge fruit salad, have fruit smoothies for breakfast, salad for lunch & a load of stir fried veggies for dinner, maybe with some steamed chicken or fish. A few days of that & I feel fine. No wine/beer or coffee.
If you're eating lots of fruit, the vitamin C may give you mild diarrhoea.0 -

I suppose a good MSE approach is to try the library first for the detox books, it's free to borrow, and just make notes of the bits you need to.
Also ask around friends, lots of people have diet & detox books idly sitting on bookshelves. e.g. I bought a copy of an Atkins diet book, but didn't get on with it, a friend mentioned she wanted to try it, so it found a new home, and it's really working for her.
Other than that try the charity bookshops and what were bestsellers, can be cheap on Amazon Marketplace etc..
Personally for detox, I try to drink more water, increase the amount of vegetarian and uncooked fruit & veg, and increase the exercise. I do tend to play it safe and take a standard multi-vit too.0 -
Personally I think de-toxing is like every other fad diet out there. There are no quick fixes when it comes to your health. Just try to stick to a healthy balanced diet with lots of good quality veggies and meat and keep away from the processed food as much as possible.
It's much better to aim for long term health than just a few days.0 -

Detox, I find in winter the best form of detox comes from fresh made soups and bread.
Organic meat (more expensive, but it makes you buy less, therefore less for your body to digest, but a good source of protein)
Hot water with lemon, instead of tea and coffee
Green tea as a change
Jasmine tea for another change!!
I make chicken soup for other half, with all the left over bits from the roast chicken on Sunday - except the big bits that he gets to eat during the week.
A fish dish at least once a week
in fact a good balanced diet will help keep you feeling on top of the world.
Also walk. walk to Uni, walk home, walk somewhere! It's free, you get fresh air and it can clear out all the cobwebs!!!
Good luck with your Uni course - what are you studying, I've just noticed your user name, matches my revision!!!!
well i think murtle has really hit the nail on the head here.
dont panic, im not about to go off on any faddy diets, or start taking any funny supplements, just ease myself back into my old, more healthier way of living.
its just that after nearly 2 months of being out of the swing of things, it can all be a bit overwhelming knowing where to start.know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
about this hot water and lemon business...is it literally just water with lemon?
(i've never been on a diet in my life, so all these types of things are completely new to me!)know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
Warm water - not too hot - with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice in it.
Dead simple. You are not supposed to "shock" your stomach with a drink that it too hot or too cold first thing in the morning."This site is addictive!"

I always put a whole slice of lemon in a cup (unwaxed if possible and washed first) then pour hot water over it but obviously let it cool down before you drink it. Lovely and lemony and wakes you up. Also if you forget it and it gets cold it still tastes nice unlike tea!0
