Good sources of iron are egg yolks, red meat, offal, fish, breakfast cereals, parsley, green vegetables, wholemeal bread and dried apricots.
Did you know that if you drink orange juice with your meals, it helps you to absorb more iron from your food? I think that drinking tea has the opposite effect.;)10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j [/COLOR]:cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Am a nutritionist. I always recommend when eating an egg have orange juice, helps absorption(any foods rich in Vitamin C.
there are 2 types of iron, heam iron and non-heam iron. Heam iron comes from foods from animal sources and absorb much easier in your body. however, if u r a vegetarian, non-heam iron foods would be your only source, Leafy green vegetables eg Spinach (remember popeye, that's what made him strong!) If ur anaemic i suggest red meat, especially liver, excellent source.
Chocolate contains iron, but very low amounts, so when i want some thats my excuse for eating it. Guinness is an excellent source of Iron as well.
Hope this will help. Classic signs of anaemia are constant tiredness and excessive thirst.0 -
Soya beans are really high in iron. I puree them and add them to meat dishes.Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0

1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -

World's Heathiest Foods Iron foodsources
Edit: A couple more points from the WHF website
Iron absorption is decreased in people with low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria), a condition that is common in the elderly and those who use antacids frequently. In addition, iron absorption is decreased by caffeine and tannic acid found in coffee and tea and by phosphates found in carbonated soft drinks.
As you say all the family are affected but are reaching your 5 a day target it may be you are drinking too much tea/coffee/fizzy drinks.
Perhaps you could consider Green Tea as this doesn't have such a high caffeine content and green tea leaf doesn't release the tannin into the brew it's another reason to change as it wouldn't have an adverse impact on your iron absorption.
