Caravan Cassette Toilet

Options
Hi everybody,

Has anyone found an effective way of cleaning the plastic Thetford Cassettes that are in most caravan toilets. Thetford offer their own brand cleaner at an extortionate price, I am wondering if simple household washing soda would do the job as good. Lime- scale builds up on the blade and rubbers, and ordinary rinsing won't budge it. Please help if you can.:o

we've got one of these but as we only bought it last year and have only used it for one camping trip this isnt a problem for us yet.But if it is a limescale problem then surely by using a standard toilet cleaner it would solve the problem wouldnt it?

Thanks for the thought but definitely NO to standard toilet cleaner. They are harsh corrosives for use on ceramics and porcelain..not plastic and rubber. We have had several caravans before and never had this problem. I think they must be using different materials to make the cassettes---can't believe our 'water' has suddenly become so 'alkaline' :rotfl:

I've seen that as well, but hadn't given it a thought. I will do that tomorrow, and post back the results. Thanks for that idea.

Hmm - I'll be interested to hear how you get on. Our old (ancient) motor caravan never developed the problem as you say, although we did replace a rubber seal once, but I don't recall that was because of limescale. We have just bought a new van recently, so will monitor the toilet. In your case I might have tried vinegar, to start with.

Thank You.. Again another good idea to try... Just a thought though..but for the first time ever on our caravan toilets,( 20 years experience) I had used the thetford propriery brand 'slide lubricant' cos I felt it was stiff to move the slide forward and backwards. It was only after using this spray that I noticed limescale building up on the slide and round the rubber.....Could it be connected??
