You are wicked, I'll now have to post a load of items just to get a new page created so I don't look at it!

DD's account is open at Abbey and transfer was received ok yesterday and showed as a balance when OH paid in the £400 she had been holding from DD's bldg soc account. Just set up a monthly SO to pay in £10; it's required to pay in something each month in order to get the 3% interest rate on the money there, but there's no minimum sum stated (11-15yr olds, for the 16-18 it is £50 per month). So this should secure the rate and is DD's PAYG allowance although at the moment she only tops up once every 3months. Her pocket money OH suggested she has in cash but I'd like to have 50% in the account and 50% cash so DD learns to actually operate the account...

scary, she is growing up :A

    Hi StuartGMC
I'm just trawling through your diary, just wanted to skip to the end to tell you how much I'm enjoying it, and how inspirational it is. I am a huge MFW fan, have been OP our current mortgage for last few months. Now moving to a new house a taking on an even bigger debt  but will give us and our young children the large family home we crave. It will be a struggle, but am planning on OPing as much as poss from day 1 to have a bigger long term impact. Unfortunately DH is not yet sold on the OPing idea, he still wants fast cars and nice clothes a little too much but slowly coming around to the idea ;)
Just a couple of questions - could I please have a copy of your household budgetting spredsheet jobby ? This is an area which is under my control but I am having difficulty getting on top of it all.
Also, you talk a lot about investing in S&S, this is something we do very little of, mostly because neither of us would have a clue where to start. What would you recommend is a good strating point in terms of research / reading up.
    Thanks

Very best wishes on your journey to MF and indeed the mammoth task of reading this rambling thread!

I'll PM you regarding the spreadsheet

Turning to the question of investments rather than savings, the best thing is to start considering how much you can afford to lock away or indeed lose before you go into investments. The most likely way forward will be via small monthly contributions and to put these in funds or investment trusts within an ISA. I would recommend reading guidance on interactive investor (https://www.iii.co.uk), Trustnet, Morningstar, Moneywise, Money Observer (which is also a monthly magazine) etc. Start only by gathering information then you can use the savings & investments thread here on MSE to get help with questions you have. I would recommend you determine if you are happy to make the decisions then to invest without an advisor especially for small sums, but if you have any doubts at all about what you are doing then definitely get expert support. Good luck in learning before investing.
