Best Basic Bank Account - Advice Please

Options
Hi

Just been to CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAU for a meeting with my debts which were 4 but have now turned into a few more. Have had to put down my catalogues, bank charges (which i am paying back till this test case is sorted), my bank loan with tsb and overdraft with tsb along with provident and greenwoods.

I didn't realise that i would have to put all this down and the debt is now £26,000 which I have £271.82 a month to pay them off. 11 in total (3 of which are bank charges)

I have been told to open a basic bank account but not sure who to go with. The 3 banks are A & L, Natwest and Abbey with charges so these are a definate NO. I am with TSB at the moment and have been with these for nearly 20 years and have £1100 overdraft with them and do feel a bit guilty about handing over the debt to debt managment.

CAN ANYONE PLEASE ADVISE ME WHICH ONE MIGHT BE BEST.....

thanks:confused:

Don't feel guilty. You are doing the right thing.

Co-Op for their cashminder account. Gives you a visa electron and basic banking, inc on line banking etc.

Norwich and peterborough do a basic account. gives you a cheque book, cashcard etc but no debit card

    both are ok accounts.

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

First Direct do a good current account - with a cheque book and debit card, with the added bonus of giving new account holders £100. This is an internet bank but their site is easy to use plus the staff in the call centre are helpful and friendly (a UK call centre open 24hrs a day 365 days a year).

If you want to pay money in - you just go to any branch of HSBC.

N&P are fantastic, I've been with them nearly 16 years, and they've never once ever let me down. If you want a good bank account with a UK call centre, this is the one for you!

ive opted for the co-op and they have been great - when i called a very nice lady opened my account within 15 mins - and i must say she was very nonjudgmental - i said i had an old catalogue default and she was vey kind said this would not effect my application and that she would not want any information she did not ask for so not to worry explaining too much

the main selling point for me was that you can pay in and withdraw upto £250 a day from any post office - and you get an electron debit card

    hope this helps

Remember with the Co-op 3 strikes and they close the account.

So do not bounce any direct debits or they will close the account.

HTH, info was posted on MSE previously.

I think Barclays do a basic account - not got it myself so not sure on the details. Everyone speaks highly of the Co-op Cashminder so that would be my first choice.
