Moved home, phone line active but not BT - who is it with?!

I've just moved home, expected phone line to be with BT but isn't. BT say there is an active phone line in the property with another provider but can't tell me who that is. Obviously don't want to pay £125 to set up a BT line. I'm renting the property, landlord being extremely unhelpful, tells me the provider was changed by tenants in Sept 2006 but doesn't know who provider is or what the phone number is (and refuses to pay BT £125).

Anyone know of a clever way to find out who the provider is? Thanks.

pick the phone up and if its got a dialing tone dial 17070 and it will tell you your number if not try 147017070
once you have done that call 150 and it should tell you who it is

Hope it's okay if I piggy-back on this thread, as I have a similar problem...

Moved into the new house yesterday; there is a handset with a dialling tone but it's not allowing calls to be made or received. I did the 17070 and got the 'circuit defined as' message okay, but when I tried 150, it won't connect, so I don't know who the last provider was.

Is there any other way I can get this information? Asking the previous homeowner isn't an option.

    Many thanks,

I would try VM, Sky or Talk Talk - they seem to have the majority of non-BT lines round here :)

Thanks kkpolobear, unfortunately there's no dial tone so I can't try that one. Nice trick though, will have to remember that for the future.

Thanks nomoneytoday, I tried VM and its not them. Will try Sky and Talk Talk, hadn't before because I thought they both required a BT line.

Good luck Lips! I noticed this on the Post Office website:

23.1 In most cases we can connect customers to Post Office HomePhone® by taking over the line from the existing provider. If we can do this, we will not charge a connection fee.

Quite tempted to do this just so I have a phone line I can use, know who it is with and hopefully not have to pay to connect.

Phoned Sky and Talk Talk, both said I need a BT phone line installed.

Phoned the Post Office who said yes, there is an active phone line in your property, if you tell us who it is with we will transfer it for free. If you don't know who the supplier is, we will charge you £110!

If you've lost your mobile phone number, or found a lost phone, and you don't have another phone to hand to check the caller ID, then this new service from FreebieSMS can text you straight back with the mobile phone number of the handset you are texting from.

Just send "PIN MYNUMBER" to 60030, from the phone, and you will get the reply in seconds. The cost for this service is 25p and is deducted from the credit balance on the phone.

Be careful of this new service and dont be tempted by freebiesms either it is free for you to send a SMS , however when you send a message, the recipient doesn’t see it. Instead they see a message asking them to text a short (premium-rate) number to see your message. It looks like the message costs 5p, but it actually costs £5!
