Be Careful ... McAfee Virus package automatically charging for yearly contract

Hi Everyone,

We like to know our ingoings and outgoings... imagine our surprise when we saw an email accompanied with a charge from £49.99 from McAfee for an automatic annual renewal we didn't instruct.

McAfee sent an email to us this week that contained a tick in a box requesting that we have "automatic renewal".

We checked our bank account today (3 days later) to find £49.99 has been taken by McAfee.

We went back to the email and tried to untick the box for automatic renewal - this is where they are sneaky. It doesn't let you untick it and just refers you to their call centre.

Once through to the call centre after many minutes being to and throwed! I demanded the following:

1. Take my account off auto renewal.

2. Refund the £49.99 you have charged to me.

3. Remove all my payment and personal details from your system and mailing lists.

I have been sucessful however my refund will take several days to credit my account (thank goodness I didn't pay by credit card because I'd be waiting over a month for it).

Anyway just to let you know these guys are out of order!

Kind regards

Sporty

Just to let you know - you can do a live web chat with a representative to remove the automatic renewal option, just to save some pennies on the phone call! HTH!

This happened to me last year, I am not going to renew this time, going to try one of the free antivirus programmes that are about now.:T

I installed Bullguard Security on my computer (less than £20 from Amamzon) and it seems to be doing a grand job. The real big bonus is since shifting Norton off my PC everything has speeded up. Bullguard gets good reviews in the magazines for keeping nasties away.

Some of the big name antivirus software is worse than a virus for eating up your computer's resources and slowing things down.

I got rid of McAfee and Norton a couple of years ago and I use free anti virus (AVG Free from Grisoft) and the PC Tools Firewall (from PC Tools). Both work brilliantly.

No need to spend out on security solutions.

I use to use McAfee and the same thing happened to me re automatic money taken but one email sorted that out and my money was refunded after I sent them an email. I was actually impressed with the speed that this was all done. i now check when taking out any type of yearly sub that all boxes are unchecked for auto annual payment. So I believe McAfee taught me a good lesson as a lesser company may well not have been so keen to refund my money so quickly.
