Looking at the manufacturers websites the quoted power consumptions of the sony lcd compared to panasonic

    sonly kdlw4000 = 176 watts
Panasonic TH-42PZ85B= 385 watts (rated) , 325 assumptive normal use

this is about 85% more power at the assumptive rate

ok its not quote 400watts + but there is a reasonable difference

Some are more than others and is dependant on model as much as display technology. You could easily cherry pick an LCD that consumes more power than a plasma on average. And of course it depends on what you describe as "average" for a plasma. There are more plasmas that "may" consume more power (depending on what you're watching) but it's certainly not universal.

It's also not really fair to make absolute power comparisons when you're choosing differently sized TVs, you're changing too many variables. Even if they both had exactly the same power consumption rate then of course the plasma you chose would still use more.

Edit: that Sony works out at 0.25 Watts/inch^2, nearest Panasonic equivalent I could find where actual power usage was tested, the calibrated result was (for TH-42PX80U) also 0.25 Watts/inch^2. Straight out of box it's 0.35 but you're meant to calibrate out of showroom settings. The actual Panasonic you selected could indeed be more, but it's not necessarily representative and certainly not as straight forward as only looking at the quoted wattage.

I too amy on the look out for a 40" LCD tv with 1080p.

Currently I think I'm going to go for the Samsung LE40M87BDX due to the good reviews I've read and it comes with free 3 year warranty for £659 with Crampton & Moore, delivery is only £30.

Does anybody have any reviews for this TV?

Don't be thinking that you *need* Full HD. Depending on the distance you are from the TV and the screen size, you won't notice the difference.

A 40" full HD LCD will have to do a lot of upscaling of SD material. If the majority of your viewing is going to be SD then it'd be worth seeing how it performs in this area.
