Mackenzie Hall

Options
Hi

About 8 years ago I stupidly ran up loads of debt on credit cards and loans. Finally I stopped burying my head in the sands and started to deal with my creditors. I am still paying some debts off on a monthly basis, and have not missed a payment in the last 3 years.

Today I got a letter from Mackenzie Hall saying that they wanted to contact me over a personal matter and could I contact them immediately.

Now I have got myself back on my feet, have gone from only being allowed an electron card to a full visa debit card with anoverdraft facility that I don't use (have learnt my lesson!)

I don't know what to do - I have requested my credit file to review what it says on there from my call credit.

Do I just ignore the letter for now and see if they contact me again or write to them requesting information on the original debt.

Really worried about this as I thought I had dealt with this all.

Ive been told that Mackenzie Hall are a DCA, they usually buy debts that are status barred. When I had a letter from them I was told to file it and ignore it. They are on a phising trip.

I've had genuine debts from Mackenzie Hall in the past - it can't hurt to call them and see what it's regarding, you don't have to acknowledge the debt (and I'm pretty certain that would have to be in writing anyway)

As someone that's buried my head in the past I know how much it can eat away at you when you worry about things like this. It's scary calling but remember, they're at the other end of a phone line and if you become uncomfortable you can hang up. One thing - if they ask you to confirm your address and phone number, do not give them a phone number as it's likely they don't have one for you and are asking you so they can chase you that way in future. Just say you don't have one.

DO NOT CALL THEM write to them and send them the standard prove it letter. They have to prove you owe a debt so you have a right to know what it is they are collecting. Knowing MH it will either be statute barred or no CCA agreement.

As stapeley and Dave say, DO NOT CALL THEM. If you call them, they will then have your phone number and will probably be contaciny you up to 8 times a day as some of the other users on this site have found out. They have your address so if it is important or you owe a debt, they will write to you detailing what it is and ask you to pay.

As Caz says, they are fishing. Don't bite. If they have details of a debt you owe it may be statute barred, and even if it isn't they probably won't have the CCA (if there was one).

For the debts you are paying off, are you in a position to offer a full and final settlement offer? (a % of the debt owed).

  • I've settled a couple on full and final settlement. Another has 5 months to go at £35 a month so not bothered about that. 1st credit offered me a full and final that reduced a 5k debt to 3k but I can't afford it until I get a bonus in december so they have withdrawn it. They were aggressive on the phone when I said that I couldn't afford it so would continue on my monthly payments but I stood my ground and said that they could threaten all they wanted but I had paid every installment on time for the last 3 years so what could they do!

Waiting to check my credit file, don't think I willcontact them before then, just to check that everything is satisfied. if not I will send them the standard letter, I just don't want to encourage them, Will they go away if I ignore them?
