Free clothes swapping event in Covent Garden, London, between 28 June and 20 July

Update 8 July 2008

What's this about?

Between now and 18 July you can take any unwanted clothes, shoes or bags to the Visa Swap Market in London's Covent Garden and receive a Visa Swap card credited with points, which can then be 'spent' on items brought in by others, on the weekend of 19 and 20 July.

The event's completely free and is backed by the charity TRAID (Textile Recycling for Aid and International Development) so if you can easily get to it, it's a great incentive to declutter your wardrobe and grab a few new outfits without spending a penny.

How many points will you get for your bits?

This depends on the type of garment, it's quality and make. For example, at the top end of the scale, a designer coat made by the likes of Versace or Matthew Williamson would bank you 1,000 points, whereas a short sleeved top by a high street brand, such as Reiss, would get 20 points.

To get a better gage of all the points allocations, checkout Visa Swap's points page. A maximum of 20,000 points can be collected, with clothes being 'resold' according to the same scale.

All clothes must be clean and in a wearable condition.

When and where

You can drop items off at at No. 1 The Piazza, Covent Garden WC2 on the following dates and times:
  • Friday 11 July 12-7pm
  • Saturday 12 July 10am-6pm
  • Sunday 13 July 12-6pm (or the Visa Swap Van will be outside Hammersmith Triad, 119 Kings Street, between 2 & 4pm)
  • Friday 18 July 12-4pm
On Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 July The Piazza will be turned into a mini department store for the swapping event to take place between 10am and 6pm.

Anything else to know?

The event's open for both ladieswear and menswear, plus tailoring can be had if the clothes you chose need a few alterations. You can only attend the swapping weekend if you've handed in clothes for points and have a Visa Swap card. Any clothes left over after the event will be donated to TRAID and unused points will expire.

  • Hi
Thanks for this. If you've only got a few points from the clothes you have taken in but want to "buy" something that costs more points, can you pay the difference in cash?
    Thanks
