Starting own business - HELP!

Hi everyone...

I am looking to start my own business in the catering industry and was wondering if anyone knew what steps needed to be taken to;

1. Register/create an organization
2. Satisfy any legal requirements e.g. taking cooking classes or passing a health and safety examination or something similar?

If any of you can please assist me or point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

Thank you for your time.

    1. This would depend on whether you want to be a Sole Trader or register it as a Ltd Company.
    2. You do not need to have any cooking experience yourself IF you aren't the one planning to do the cooking. You would need, however, qualified staff who can prove they are capable of the jobs and have the relevant Basic Hygiene certificates and whatever else would be needed.

Go to your local council, they will provide all the documents you need in regard to H&S and Hygeine, its fairly comprehensive and not cheap to set up.

Also make sure you have adequate insurances - i'd imaging the catering industry could get pretty nasty if you poisoned someone (not saying that you will - but dodgy ingredients will always be a possibility)

    Hi...

Thank you all for taking time out to respond to my query.

Yes I imagine I will need product liability insurance coverage.

I have a lot of reading to do so I guess I had better get cracking with that but if there are any other useful sites/go-to companies then please keep them coming.

Do any of you know the impact on my tax (I know it is in a booklet I have just printed off) if I have my own business and am working for a corporation too earning a salary?

To the first respondant - Yes I am serious else I would not waste my time posting.

    Cheers

    Vivek

They do all forms of business insurance and I found them very helpful and knowledgable

i would get a job in Mcdonalds* first to see if you like the environment.

I have a friend thats in catering and you will end up devoting your life to it, which is fine if you can reap the rewards of a profitable business but in reality a start up catering business is no easy ticket.

    Good luck
