Also ,anyone any thought on refurb models that pop up occasionally?

Supermarket is probably the best place to start - internet retailers are never good for these as the postage makes them uneconomical.
Asda, Tesco or possibly Argos are your best bets (cheaper supermarkets like Aldi, KwikSave etc. may also do cheap ones, but I find the bigger supermarkets are just as cheap and have better service).0 -
for a run of the mill portable tv the absolute cheapest price is about £49
available from tesco, asda, dixons, currys, comet, empire, argos, wherever is local.
for one with a dvd player built in- they start at about £69 for the absolute cheapest with proper branded ones hovering around the £100 mark.
own brands for the £49 ones are:
tesco- digilogic
asda- durabrand/pacific
dixons/ currys- waltham/ matsui
comet- proline
argos tend to sell beko and alba stuff as their cheapest.
i guess it depends on how old the kids are as to which option is best (i.e would having features like text/scart sockets be of benefit)
Refurbs: i bought one a couple of years ago and it was reasonably cheap at the time, depends where you buy it from and what kind of warranty you get, if the savings are small it might not be worth it but sometimes savings can be quite large...things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then

agreed, and its a pain in the behind if the tv breaks and you have to LITERALLY send it back (i.e in the post  )
asda have a durabrand tv for about £48 or £49
tesco have a digilogic for about the same and a bush for about £55
argos had a beko for about £50 at one time (should still have them)
anyone else got anything to add?things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then

thx guys. Will look at Asda I think. Bought a tv a couple of years ago from Tesco and it was a real pain TBH when it went faulty. Conversely, I am now on my 3rd DVD player which I bought from Asda when they unbelievably started giving 3 year warranties on anything wiht a plug a couple of years ago

They soon stoppped that one LOL
Plus they change anything in Asda, so I will go there.

We had a cheap (£50, but a couple of years ago) DVD player started making funny noises so we took it back about a year later and they gave us a replacement on the spot, a refund of the difference (as the price had gone down by £10 since we bought it) and renewed the warranty
