Advantis Credit - Bogus??

My boyfriend has just received a letter from Advantis Credit advising that he should contact them immediatly as he owes money to Southern Water that they are collecting.
When he called AC they said he owed it from a previous address where he lived 3 years ago. However, he thinks that this bill should have been paid by his landlady and so he called Southern Water to try and resolve the issue.
The reason we are suspicous of AC is because Southern Water cannot even find an account for my boyfriend's previous address! This would make sense if the landlady paid all the bills.
What do we do now? Southern Water say they have no account/record and AC is threatening with court action.
Has anyone else had this problem? Are they bogus? How can we go to court for not paying something that never existed??? That's ludicrous!
Please help.
Thanks.

They could be bluffing, but even if they are not they can't win.
You should write to the water company and get it in writing that your BF never had an account with them.0
