Moving abroad but buying in UK

Options
I would be grateful for any advice on my situation.

I am in the process of buying a flat with a friend. We are about to put in an offer, and are going to apply for a joint mortgage (50:50) with Alliance & Leicester. The problem is that I have just got a new job and will be moving to Africa for two years in November. I don't own any other property, I will be earning a tax free salary, and will not be renting out my half of the property whilst I am abroad. I will not be a UK resident for those two years, nor will I have a UK-based employer.

My questions are:
1. Does this change my situation, meaning that I can't get a mortgage?
2. Might I be able to get any tax break on the mortgage whilst I'm away?
3. Do I have to declare this to the mortgage lender when I apply?

Thanks
