Veggie Pastry Snacks

Options
When we go to Glastonbury Festival we love to eat from a certain stall called Veggies. They sell home made vegan pastry snacks such as SOS sausage rolls and rattatui (sp?) pasties. I am not vegan so I do eat butter, milk etc and will cook with eggs if I have to but avoid if it possible. Can anyone give me any tips on making pastry and what type I would need for these trpe of snacks?

I will probably buy a packet of sos sausage mixture from the super market but if anyone has any tips on ways of making this I would love to give it ago from scratch.

Thanks!

  • Oh thats a shame, I really wanted some advice. Not to worry, if anyone does want to help all I really need to know is a basci recipe for the type of pastry you might use for sausage rolls as I have no idea and cannot find any in the index.

    Thanks.

I can't help you with the veggie stuff, and short crust pastry is OK (ish) for sausage rolls and samosas, though puff pastry is pretty good too.

If you go to the bero site

..and click on pastry on the right hand side you'll get a list of bullet proof recipes for pastry :)

    Hi,

Found a ratatouille pasty recipe, it uses a variation of shortcrust pastry with cheese in it.

    Here's the link:

  • Thanks, I have printed the guide off and will have a go when I get the sausage mixture. Fingers crossed they will work out cheaper than buying Linda Mcartneys ones!

don't know if you have looked at this site??

    http://www.veganvillage.co.uk/recipes/vegan.htm

I usually substitute any ingrediets like butter with their vegan/non dairy equivalent.

If memory serves me - isn't a basic pastry half fat to flour?

if so then make the pastry, roll it out and you can make pasties, I like to fill them with leftovers etc.

seal them and use beaten egg to glaze - I know you are meant to seperate the egg, but I never remember which half to use, so if you use the yolk to glaze, you can use the whites for merangues!!!

I just want to say that sosmix makes great sausage rolls - I used to make them before I found out about the problems associated with hydrogenated oils.
