Lidl won't take stuff back with receipt.

I bought 4 electrical items from Lidls..costing £127 about 2 weeks ago.

I've now decided I don't want the items and tried to take them back.

I've not opened them...they are in the original heatshrink plastic packages...(the stuff thats really hard to open).

Lidl won't take them back..even with the receipt.
They said they would only take them back if they were faulty.

The girl on the till said I should open them...then go back and say they are faulty.

It seems stupid to me that the only way to get my money back is to lie about them...rather than Lidl taking them back and putting them on the shelf again.

Are they obliged to give a refund if I change my mind ??
I can understand if I had opened them and they couldn't sell them again.

No, they're not obliged to take them back just because you don't want them any more.

    Why on earth should they?

They don't have to refund just because you have changed your mind.

No company has to do this, but many high street and big online companies will do as part of their good customer service.

If I'm ever unsure about buying anything, I always ask before paying about their policies on returning goods.

I discussed this with a Lidl area manager once and he said that it was to discourage people buying a number of items and trying to re-sell them on e-bay or boot sales and then bringing them back when they can't sell them. It seems the honest are suffering for the dishonest. I did however point out that this should be clearly published.

He added that there was some discretion in this, so if your Items are 4 different ones, it may be worth talking to the manager or phoning their customer services, who incidentally I've found very helpful.

note - refunds over I think £20 are by cheque and only after the item has been checked so it might not be a good idea fabricating a broken item story.

PS, I've also experience grief trying to get a refund for broken items if you try to bring them back to another Lidl - they don't like processing onther store's problems - hence my discussion with the area manager, who actually confirmed that they should take back broken items in whatever store. Also getting a replacement is impossible.

If they are 4 identical items, I doubt they would believe you saying all four are faulty. Try giving them as xmas pressies or sell them on ebay/free ads paper

    You're stuffed.
  • My hubby used to work at Lidl and no they don't do returns because you've changed your mind.
They are a discount store after all and they have to keep prices down.
They do however exchange items that are faulty or damaged and clothes that "dont fit" (because they have no changing room).
So as long as you give them one of the reasons above, they will refund your item no worries!
Never go in & say "I've changed my mind" at Lidl! It doesn't wash! :D

Target - to pay off all debts by 2020 :A
  • I believe that Aldi let you return goods within 12 months for whatever reason - I presume this means "change of mind" In my view Aldi are much better - good, staff (BHC's husband excluded) and customer service.

No they are not obliged to give you your money back or offer an exchange if the goods are not faulty. Many stores may offer this service but it's discretionary, in law if the goods are fit for the purpose they were sold for then they have fulfilled their contract with you.

    I bought 4 'gadgets' because
A: I thought they would sell out really fast....and I was right !
B: I've got 3 brothers who I thought would jump at having this item....bloomin typical  none of them wanted it, as all said the item was crap !

It was a rush of blood to the head that made me buy 4. I didn't have a phone at the time to ring round...see who wanted one.

I don't see what their problem is here..they would sell these items in 10 minutes of being on the shelf.

As for the car boot sale / ebay comment....I didn't buy to sell....but can't see why selling on a car boot or ebay is dishonest either

after all...it's only another chain in the distribution.

It is not dishonest or as far as I know illegal - although the taxman might be interested. The problem with this is it prevents true buyers from purchasing the goods - It's like the people who buy up loads of concert tickets to sell on e-bay - it stopps the true fans buying them.

All power to Lidl for doing this - my only issue is that they should publish the policy more clearly.

Are you sure you didn't intend to resell them - you seemed to have reacted strongly to my comments - I wasn't accusing you of trying this.
