Desperately need advice on employment issue

I'm posting under an AE for obvious reasons. I'm looking for advice concerning my job. I don't want to go into the reasons why I want to leave (very good reasons) but the job is tied to accommodation and if I leave it means I'm homeless too. I have no contract of employment and been there a year. I know, call me stupid.
Employer said they want 6 weeks notice and if I just leave before the 6 weeks is up I doubt they will give me a reference. So what do I do? If I apply for jobs in the mean time the prospective employer will want a reference and I've not told current employer I am leaving. I cannot risk losing this job and being homeless right now and want to sort a job before I go. If I give my notice (not legally required due to no contract) then they will want me to leave when the 6 weeks is up and I might not have another job to go to.
What can I do? I am arranging to see CAB this week and I'm not sure they can really help and I am worried about giving my employer's details while still living here. I hope you can help me and please don't be too hard as this situation is desperate and really I don't think I can take any more.

Why should you give them 6 weeks notice?
You have no contract that states as such!!!:cool:0 -
Exactly Dippy, but if I don't give them notice I won't get a reference. The employer is very unreasonable to say the least.0

Dippychick - InaMess knows that (said so in the post) - the problem is the tied accommodation and getting a reference.
InaMess - If accommodation would go with the job you would move to, just make sure you have a backstop position, somewhere to move to for the short time between jobs if you need to. Ensure everything is in order so you can move out at short notice. If there is a problem with getting a reference, you will just have to explain this to your new prospective employer.
Good luck with the jobsearch.0 -
So it does! My apologies!:cool:0

Thanks LittleVoice. I hope a prospective employer will be understanding, but I can see things getting nasty with the current one. It's so awkward as the type of job I do means I might have to relocate and I don't know if I could rent for a while (say a month) at short notice. Also, if I do rent they will want to have a reference from current employer in which case they will definitely kick me out before a home gets sorted. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.0

I think you will probably tell me that your company doesn't do this, but if they do annual (or 6-monthly) performance reviews and document that, you could use your copies as evidence for a new employer.
Again, this may not work in your circumstances, but could a manager write a personal reference but include that they knew you from your time with the organisation?0 -
Thats quite unreasonable demand from employer . But here is something i will suggest .
1. dont take risk of job if you dont have house to live . do work with your employer few more months to save some money .
after few months you can
2. Discuss this problem with your future employer and tell him you can join only after 6 weeks
3. make good relation with your current employer and try to explain him your problem0 -
I don't get performance reviews in the job LittleVoice. There is nobody else to ask for a reference.
One of the reasons I'm leaving is because I have only received part of my wages and can see that continuing which is why I must get out asap Anky.
What can the Citizens Advice Bureau do for me? Would it be a waste of time going there?0 -
CAB can probably give more definite advice because you will be able to explain more fully what your situation is, which I guess you do not want to do on a public forum, even as AE InaMess.
Thinking about your accommodation - do you have many possessions? Would you need to put them into storage (at a cost) or do you have a relative or friend that you could move them to?
Looking at the worst case, you might become homeless but you would not need to be roofless. CAB should also be able to tell you about benefits to which you may be entitled.0 -
I know I've been vague about my situation but I'm paranoid that my employer will see this. Unlikely, but I don't want to take the chance. I have a few possessions clothes, bedding not furniture and there isn't anyone I can call on for help.0
