Northern Rock - Have your escaped their Early Repayment Charge?

I have a 2 year fixed mortgage with Northern Rock at 4.95%, ending 1st March 2009. Its a great rate, but I want to find a 10 year fix else where sooner rather than later whilst rates are still ok and before criteria and LTV's for the best rates tighten further. Especially as house prices are on the way down.
I have asked Northern Rock if they will let me out of the ECR (£8,000!) if I redeem early and they have said 'NO' they will still charge it as its part of the contract - you would have thought they would want their money back!
Has anyone had sucess in getting out of a Northern Rock Early Redemption penalty? If so, how! I would love to know!
