York - areas to avoid?

Options
I justify this being a money-saving topic because being mugged is definately NOT moneysaving :D:p

Moving soon for postgrad course and hopefully will stay as more chance of employment in my field.
Are there any areas to avoid? I won't be in typical student parts - I will more likely be on a council estate or similar. Also bear in mind I'm coming from a.... deprived... area in Leeds so am used to a certain level of scruffiness.
But any tips / hints welcome

Yes these areas and I'll add Kingsway North although fortunately York doesn't have many or any no go areas that I'm aware of (lived in York 37 years).

some bits of Acomb are a bit "dodgy" as well...agree with all the other posts as well, Tang Hall esp.
  • Thanks :)
    What about Clifton / Rawcliffe?
I've heard of a place sat kinda in between the A19 and Wigginton Road, just north west of the hospital?

Helen some parts of Clifton are very nice (and expensive) but Kingways North council estate is on the edge of Clifton so as long as you're not near that area for me it's nice. You are on the edge of the city and can walk into town. Don't know much about rawcliffe TBH.

Unfortunately good areas cost more to live in. And you can't get a council property easily unless you have 3 kids, another on the way, and are an asylum seeker or immigrant. A single person would expect a very long wait as if they already live somewhere they are not considered priority.
  • I'm working on a house swap ;) I got lucky with my current home, so once you're in the system it's not impossible to move around... if you know where you're going! :rotfl:

    thanks guys

I'm also moving to York and wondered if anyone had any info about the Boroughbridge area of Acomb. Is it any nicer or worse than the main part of Acomb?
