I'm new to this game, and trying to work out how to get my foot on the first rung. Martin's 'Sneakily get top mortgage advice for free' article has been really helpful
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1101649966,86816,
But I thought I'd just let others know that rather than registering online with Charcol to get their mortgage comparison (which costs £5), you can bypass this by going to the FTYourMoney website:
http://news.ft.com/yourmoney/compare/mortgages
They use Charcol to compare mortgages and it's free! Every penny counts, after all.

Still asks for your reg details at the end.
Anyway, why not just use the free ones - moneysupermarket, etc? They're all much the same.0
