Clearance Plants 50p in Woolworths

Took a short cut through Woolworths today (not a regular shopper there) and stopped in my tracks by the markdowns on their plants.
Many are down to just 50p:
Examples:
Trees: Twisted Willow, Acer, Hornbeam, Poplar, Flowering Cherry
Fruit Bushes: Loganberry, Tayberry, Blueberry, Gooseberry
Plants: Climbing Hydrangea, Winter Flowering Jasmine.
Also: a twin pack of Roses (1 White, 1 Red) for 75p.
There were others, these are just the ones I remember. They are all looking the worse for wear - these stores never seem to water or care for the plants! - but my eye was caught by a sticker on the packs, which says "guaranteed to grow, or your money back".
I queried this with the Sales Assistant and she confirmed, if they don't grow Woolworths will refund what you've paid.
So if you're gardening this Bank Holiday Weekend, check out what Woolies have in your store! If you're lucky, you'll get bargain-basement plants to fill your garden. But hang onto your receipt - if they don't grow, at least you'll get your money back!

Be aware that most of these have now been in store for months and based on the stock in my local I doubt that many would survive (if they are still alive at all!)
I looked at them when they were reduced weeks ago and could not find a single tree amongst fifty or so that showed any signs of life!
I did find two rose bushes though that still looked OK but most of our local reductions are only fit for the skip.
If the smaller plants are boxed, make sure you check them before buying.0 -
Oh, bad luck Phil, your store must be particularly cruel to plants!
I agree, you do have to sort through the boxes looking for signs of life. Fortunately, three of mine do have green shoots/leaves on; and the climbing hydrangea is pretty good with plenty of leaves, just a few fallen off.
It is a gamble, whether you can nurse poorly specimens back to health..but then, it's only a 50p gamble, and Woollies are guaranteeing your money back if the gamble fails. Seems fair enough to me.
If I get any of my 50p -ers to survive, I'll let you know!0 -
Be aware though that if they don't grow you can't just take the box and receipt back. I was in the queue behind someone last week and the SA was telling her that she'd have to actually have to dig the bulbs or whatever they were up and bring them in as well to prove they hadn't grown otherwise everyone would be doing it!!!0

Yes, the Sales Assistant said the same to me.
But honestly, how is a Sales Assistant going to be able to tell one black twig from another? If it doesn't grow, your sales receipt and your story are going to clinch the refund; not the dead plant!
Although I am in no way advocating dishonesty, you could present ANY old twig/stick to get your refund! No need to dig up the plant.0 -

Because of health and safety the plants aren't watered when in store
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
They never water them in my local store with, nor in the garden outdoor bit of the local DIY store either!!Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100/100miles
