Ohhh I shall give this a go - I'm trying to only use butter but the price does put me off - we go through so much here - this looks like a great way to eeek it out further.

    Thanks:T

I used to do this many years ago - I got the idea from Margarite Pattern's book 'We'll eat again' about WW2 food.

The only thing I had problems with was that if you put it on toast it was a bit soggy, but then it is low fat spread really and many of us are used to them now.

I'm sure I've read about something similar but they used milk instead of water and I think you can use oil to make a "spreadable" butter?

I believe it was further down in that blog that she quoted the variation - ie making spreadable butter. Whichever - the quantities given were 250grammes of butter and 2 Tabsps oil and I have been wondering since I read this whether this "works" - so reportbacks welcome.

I tried beating milk into butter a while ago and it never worked very well, i ended up with something quite crumbly.:o
I`ve no idea what went wrong but i`ll give it another go in the near future and this time i think i`ll use the electric mixer and soften the butter more, i never thought about adding oil too so i might try adding milk and oil to the butter together.

    Hi ceridwen,

There are some old stylers who have tried this and found it to work. Have a look at this thread:
