Hi, long story short I have one debt left to pay and I’m finally done and out of trouble.
Problem is I left the big one until last, £2,809 owed to Barclays from around 2004 that they have sold to Booker Management Services. BMS have tracked me down, how I have no idea, to my current address and have sent a letter threatening baliffs, warrant of execution, etc. it says there is also a county court judgement.
I know I’ve got to pay it and I want rid of it, how is something I’ll have to figure out. My question is this:
Will they take some sort of settlement figure? And if so in what sort of region on a debt of £2,809 should I be looking at?
AND does s settlement make my credit rating even worse?
Thanks guys, really, really appreciate it.

In my opinion, their 'threats' are just that - threats.
Did they quote any reference number for the alleged 'CCJ'?
You need to check on the existence of any claimed 'CCJ'. Even IF one has been obtained, it is not the end of the world. You can, always, go back to the Court with an offer of payment - if the Court agrees, then any such order would be just as binding on BMS as it would be on you.
As far as your credit rating is concerned, then you should check to see if their are any 'defaults' relating to this debt - this should, also, show details of any CCJ.
If there IS a defaulted CCJ on your credit file, then any agreed 'Settlement' that you agree should be noted against that default, and it should be amended accordingly.
Have a word with National Debtline - 0808 808 4000, CCCS - 0800 138 1111, or a debt adviser at your local CAB. They will be able to advise you on your options for dealing with this debt - and on how you should deal with BMS.
Good luck.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

They quoted "Barcalys Account Refrence: 811221"
Does that mean it's made up?
Thanks for your help0 -

It certainly doesn't sound like a County Court Reference to me, fj.
I appreciate that you do not deny that you have a 'debt' with Barclaycard, but it may well be worth your while requesting a true copy of your consumer credit agreement, from BMS. BMS are legally obliged to provide you with this information, within 12 working days, under the terms of the Consumer Credit Act, 1974.
Assuming that they can provide this information, it will, at least, show if, and when, a CCJ was obtained, as well as how much of the 'debt' is made up of dubious charges, and will give you a basis on which to decide how best to move forward.
If, on the other hand, they can not provide you with this information, then it may, also, be that they are not legally allowed to pursue you for this 'debt'.
Have a look at:

Hi again Rog
No I know this is a genuine debt, i've been burying my head and trying not to think about it catching me up. I just want to know the best course of action to sort it now, if I can pay less then obviously that will help.0 -
Someone else on here offerred 40p in the pound, I think and held firm when they asked for more saying she'd continue paying her £x per month and offer the lump sum to another creditor. They accepted her offer. Can't remember who it was but I read it today. Perhaps someone else can remember??
One thing to watch is how your credit file will be marked. I think the possibilities include "settled" = good and "partially settled" = not so good and alerts other lenders that you haveen't paid in full. You might want to negotiate for "settled" and obviously follow up in writing and get the name and position of the person with whom you deal.CCs @0% £24k Dec 05 £19,621.41 Au £13400 S 12600 Oct £11,981 £9481 £7500 Nov £7250 D £7100 Jan 6950 F £5800 Mar£5400 May £4830 June £4660 July £4460 Aug £3200, S £900, £0 18/9/07 DFW Nerd 0420 -
Hi
Sorry to hijack this thread but it seems like the best place as I've had exactly the same thing happen this weekend...
Letter from BMS on Saturday with a similar account reference (805224) referring to a £1031.89 debt with Barclays - I actually don't know what this is for as I've got a confirmation letter that I have paid off my Graduate Loan, and I closed my bank account years ago with no overdraft. All I can think is it could be for a Barclaycard but if it is it would be years old (possibly about 5 or 6) and I'm pretty sure I paid that off too...
Anyway, the main issue I have is that I got an Experian report recently and noticed they had looked me up back in January as a general check, I looked on these forums at the time and read all of this, so I've kind of been expecting a letter. However, when they looked me up they'd found me under an old address (number 96) - I actually live next door now so my postman is wise to this and knows to post all my letters through to me at number 94. My question is this - should I just ignore the letter and wait for them to track me down at the proper address, or should I send them the letter telling them I don't acknowledge the debt and ask them to provide details?

Hi lilian
Some members would agree and say:lilian1977 wrote: »ignore the letter and wait for them to track me down at the proper address
However, if it was me, and I wanted rid of the debt, I would:lilian1977 wrote: »or should I send them the letter telling them I don't acknowledge the debt and ask them to provide details?Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

Thanks 10past6. I'm tempted to go into Barclays tomorrow and try and find out what it's in relation to - would this be acknowledging the debt? And also, if it was a real debt would it not have shown up on an Experian report before now? I order them every few months to check everything looks the way it should be. All I've seen so far is them doing a generic check on my address...My debt free diary | Post Office loan: £2131 1429.38 | Barclaycard: £4429 1988.12 | Paypal Credit £322.71 574.91 | Monzo Flex £169.03 |
