Travel Expenses rate - Is mine reasonable?

I work as a school dinner lady taking dinners, plates etc for up to 50 children from one school to another and back. I get paid 40p per mile and travel 17 miles a day in my 1.4 petrol car.
The thing is it makes my little car very heavy and gets alot of wear and tear from the bumpy country roads. When I started work in november last year 40p per mile seemed a good deal but with rising petrol prices do you think this is reasonable? Starting to struggle a bit at the moment so don't want to be ripped off.
I'd be grateful of your opinions as I have no previous experience of travel expenses.

I think this would be better posted on the tax advice site, but I can say that the 40p a mile (for the first 10,000 miles and 25p thereafter) is HMRC's tax free mileage allowance and is correct. If the school paid you any more it would be taxable.:rotfl:I'm Cosmo, Cosmo Kramer! :rotfl:0

Thanks for that info. Just looked at HMRC site. I see what you mean, the rate is set it stone isn't it.
Do you think they're likely to increase it soon? As they say 'every little helps'.0 -
The rates have not changed since 2002/03 when they went DOWN:eek: The chancellor wishes to discourage travel by car for business hence the introduction of a rate of 20p for a bicycle:D , but I guess the dinners would be cold if you used that method of transportation:rotfl: :rotfl:[strike]Debt @ LBM 04/07 £14,804[/strike]01/08 [strike]£10,472[/strike]now debt free:j
