Help with my credit report

Ive just been looking at my credit report and theres a bit on it that says CIFAS, and something about fraud, can anyone explain this to me? Ive copied it below, but had to take the details out!

Entry Number:F1
Name used:Not my name, a old tennant
Address used:My current address
fraud type:Category6: First Party Fraud - Opening an account or other facility for a fraudulent purpose, or the fraudulent misuse of an account or facility.
More info from:Name of a well known bank
Information date:
04/02/2008

Im also concerned about the information date, does this mean the date it happened as I have lived at this address for a few years.

    Hi Kirsty.

I'm not sure I can help really, but would have thought that contacting the company you got the report from would be the best start. Presumably its Exquifax or Experian. I should imagine that if you can prove it's not you, they should be able to remove it.

Good luck and I'm sure someone else will come along with much better advice.

Cifas - stands for Credit Industry fraud avoidance system.

Where a bank or Finance company has received an application for credit and some information they have been given is not correct when checked there is a possibility of a fraud being instigated. Someone using someone elses details to obtain credit.

In this case it appears they are using an old tenants name but your current address.

This means that if you or anyone at your address applies for credit then a warning will be flagged up to the lender under the CIFAS system.
The lender must then check to with the named bank to see if there is any connection between you and the Cifas information.
If they believe there is no connection then you should get credit - they should not turn down an application just because there is a cifas warning - they have an obligation to investigate further.

You could contact the credit reference agencies and ask them to put a "notice of correction" on your credit file - something to the effect that the cifas warning is not associated with yourself.

The date this happened was 4/2/2008 - it may be that your address was given as a previous address of the person that is trying to obtain credit.
