It is by quite a margin, I sent two containers over there last year, they cost more for the ferry crossing to the IOW than they cost to ship from Israel, through Felixstowe, and transport to the south coast.
The ferry companies conspire between themselves and price fix, which seems odd as in any other industry the govt would be down on them like a ton of bricks. I'm all for companies running at a profit, but not at the expense of free market trading.0 -

LINK HERE to info on what is planned for the Island schools.I have found a house for sale,( can't remeber where now, but the gumphf said close to commuter links to mainland, is that Rhyde, maybe?).
Was it this one?

Another thing to bear in mind if you want to live near to a ferry is how you are going to travel. If you are foot passengers and are going to Portsmouth, then Ryde would be the place due to the hovercraft/catamaran, but if you are taking a work van / car over, or are wanting to go to Southampton, then you would be looking at the Fishbourne area.0 -
Yep, that's the house, We were tempted because it's cheaper than the one we are in at mo, bigger garden & although we would have to alter location of some rooms, we thought i could be seen as an investment if we could sit out the next 5 years or so credit crunch debarcle.
We are quite lucky where we are now; private road, tucked out the way, not over-looked at all, off-road parking, but the garden's a bit small and as our business is landscaping, we would like to be able to get stuck-in, as it were and utilise our knowledge etc0 -
I grew up on the Island, and opportunities can be limited. I'm not sure how informed some of these comments are about the schools - it varies. The comprehensive I went to was, I think, the worst on the Island - but you know, you get out of it what you put in.
I'd really think about the cost of commuting to the mainland, as the car ferry is quite exorbitant. I don't think there is much difference if you live in Ryde or Fishbourne regarding the car ferry, given that it is only a ten minute drive from Ryde.
I think it's feasible if you want a slower pace of life. Most places are generally very safe, even late at night. On the downside, it can be incredibly dull for young people. Let's just say that the majority of those I went to school with who ended up remaining on the Island were the ones that were too thick to go elsewhere.'We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. i have been watching IOW house prices lately and with a cheeky offer could get a very nice house compared to home county prices, in fact to the point in my case of being mortgage free. This house is big enough to be split in order to part let as a holiday let and give some income.
I wondered if anybody else has actually done this and particularly if they feel their quality of life is better?0
