Simple meals are the best

I think, having read lots of the threads here. Keep it simple seems to be the theme regarding recipes.
I whole heartedly agree by the way.
Most contributors seem to make tasty meals with just a few standard ingredients.
Look through any glossy supplement and find many an exotic sounding dish which has about 25 different ingredients, most of which you don't have to hand, which also takes ages to prepare. You are left with half bottles of this and that what you sling in the cupboard never to be used again.
I have no doubt some of these meals are delicious, but how many people I wonder actually make them.

Most of us probably make them without the specialist ingredient
and figure we'll bung in a bit of chilli or something and it'll be okay. And mostly it is, happily

Haha, well I'm just a student, I live on simple meals
a) saves you money on food
b) saves you time to prepare
I'm lucky though, my flatmate likes cooking so from time to time I have those sophisticated meals too.
However, don't you think that simple meals can be healthier? Just think about people living in the past. Their food choces weren't as diverse as we have nowadays, however, they were far healthier than we're today. Simple = healthy?0 -
I think there's a cultural thing there. Traditional English food is quite simple, but think about Indian 'peasant' cooking - masses of different spices go to make up the meal, and the preparation methods aren't particularly simple either.
I don't regard a recipe as complicated if the ingredients are mostly things that I already have.Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000 -
i think kunekune makes a good point there about the cultural differences.
in terms of simplicity, there is often nowt better than those simple meals you throw together - something on toast, egg and chips, pot luck from the freezer! i think a lot of us are so preoccupied with trying to keep things interesting that we forget how good the easy meals can be.know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
I was once the manager of a large hotel and lived on site. I ate whatever the chef's made the customers for dinner - so i ate my way through the entire menue, it was nie dont get me wrong, but they always pulled a funny face when i said i wanted beans on toast or something similar.
If i went home to my parents they would always suggets going to a rerstaurant, i always declined and ate at home it was like going into work all over agian, she saw the funny side of it though....
So yeas Simple meals are sometimes the nicer meals - and to be honest like prev posts they can be healthier too, i put on weight in year i was at the hotel, rich food....0
