How much experience do you think is needed?

I've been looking for a new job and I'm interested in working in a travel agents.

I can't afford to do a course in T&T but I've found a job, in all 3 of First Choices branches which are nearest to me!

In the description, it says 'must have experience as a travel consultant' along with other things which I'm fine with.

I've got my cheeky head on, so could booking holidays online for yourself and searching and booking holidays for other people come into that?? It mentions nothing about actually having experience working as a travel consultant or working in a travel agents, so do you think I ought to go for it?

I've thought, if I don't ask I don't get, and the worst thing is they could say No.

    No harm in trying..

    But..

When it says 'must have experience as a travel consultant' then I would say you don't meet that criteria..

What similar experience do you have?

    Ah bum!

I do have experience as a travel consultant ~ family and friends have consulted me and I've helped them find and book a holiday to travel! :rotfl:

I know what you mean, like I said I've just got my cheeky head on! :D

Don't bother; you haven't got the skills required.

Exactly so go for it and it could be they might have a trainee position now or in the future!

That's what Steve said to me! He said ring or pop in and enquire and explain that I'd love to be trained up if I don't meet what they are looking for.

It doesn't bother me if it's only minimum wage because that's all I'm on now :)

The fact that you don't know the answer to this shows that you don't have them. On the other hand there's no reason why you can't see if they'd be prepared to train you; just don't go in thinking that doing bookings on the internet fro friends has any relevance at all!

Oldernotwiser, I think shellsuit was being ironic!

I have a friend who works for a travel agent (not FC), and with the exception of those who have gone in as management, none of her colleagues had any previous experience. The ads always stated 'experience required'!

I am sure that you can gear your cv to showing how your current experience and skills are relevant.

Booking holidays online is relevant. How do you think that travel agents book holidays?!! With the exception of the database that is used to search for 'I have no idea what I am looking for, tell me what is available on these dates', most holiday bookings are done on exactly the same screens as those used by anybody else! The only difference is that they enter a special code identifying themselves so that they can get their commission!

Good luck shellsuit ... if you don't try you'll never know! x
    Gone ... or have I?

    Shellsuit;

Bags of enthusiasm [which cannot be learnt] is worth any amount of working experience [which technically can be learnt]; so go for it.

I've known many people get good jobs on a blag and be brilliant, and others with the so called 'experience' who were absolutely sh1te.

As you said, they can only say no.
