Hi Myrtle, I missed this post!
I was a feisty veggie to start, converted my Mum, brother and two friends...of these only my Mum remains veggie these days! People are still apologetic when they eat meat in front of me...but I hate the thought that I make them feel bad! I would never intentionally do so...though I guess it doesn't hurt that it means they're thinking about the origins of their food.

i've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 16 years (no meat or fish products but i drink a little milk and eat free-range eggs)... have never heard of the cranks bible but i'm definitely going to buy it now so thanks for that!
i read an organic food book recently written by someone who's one of the archers and was stunned when i read that on a particular farm the lambs had such a wonderful, fulfilling life until their death... at just 26 weekshmmm.... yes... very "fulfilling"
i just read ted's post and it reminded me of that... it just makes me so sad to read that some people think that it's better to have animals lead some kind of life before they are callously led to their death  (why is that for us to judge??)
also, why do people use the argument that "if no-one ate meat there would be no farm animals?" i know people who keep farm animals as pets... if i could afford to, i would too, if only to save them from slaughter.
it really is a stupid argument as for one thing it aint gonna happen - too many people are brought up in today's society believing that eating meat and fish is ok. for another thing, why should there be no farm animals just because no-one's eating them? what about all the other thousands of types of animals in this world that are not eaten by the majority of people - and yet they're still here!? in the same way that other animals are bred for their existence rather than food, then so could farm animals. obviously. they're beautiful as they are, without being decorated on a dinner plate.0 -

But if there is a large veggie indian comunity near you or asian store you can get 1Kg bags of soya chunks mince for 99p and Tofu 500g for about 70p.
For fried tofu the £10 bags are way cheaper than the £1.50 bag.
Red Lentils are around £2.50 for 4 or 5 kg (not a typo) and spices are about £1.50 per KG garlic £1 per KG
5 Cans of chick peas are £1.
Basmatic rice is about £10 per 10KG sack Chapatti flour £2.60 per 32 KG bag (not a typo).
H&B are quite priceySeth.0 -
Hi
Does anyone know of any dishes using cooked or baked Avocado?

Baked acovado, we used to do one at a restaurant I worked in, Halve the avo add prawns in the gap (if you eat them) add cheese sauce over the top, baked in the oven.
It also works as a topping for pizza.
(do you prefer it cooked??! I love mine raw mashed and mixed with salt and vinegar)
Sorry that's all I can think of for the moment...with post back if my brain kicks into gear!!0 -
I'm an avocado loving veggie too! Although, in my GI diet book it says you should only eat 1/4 per day cos they're quite high in fat. :-(
For a quick snack I mash them onto toast with plenty of freshly ground black pepper, top with a little bit of grated cheese or a sliced tomato and grill for a few minutes!! yummy!!! ooo my tummy's rumbling just thinking about it!
Try Googling 'Baked Avocado' there are looooooads of tasty ideas, too many to list here!!0 -
I came to look at this thread because my step daughter is a 'piscaterian' (spelling?!). I've been told that is the correct term for non-meaters who eat fish (most 'veggies' I know come under this label). I am a meat eater and was brought up on a farm with a mum who turned turned veggie (a while after we left the farm)!
The recipes are great - I want us all to eat the same things when my step daughter visits. But apart from that I love veg, pulses etc anyway.
Point is I think this site should be about recipes. No one here should have to defend their lifestyle choice. After all, I haven't seen any vegetarians hijacking the mainstream recipe thread!!£16,500 in debt.
New debt free date: 2015 (was 2046!!).
Thanks MSE for helping me budget and therefore increase payments from £30 per month to £1500 -
I thought that grazing was healthy for the fields. I was under the assumption that in the olden days they used to alternate fields to "rest" from growing crops for a year & for the year it was used for grazing.
I could be totally wrong about this so please correct me if I am.0 -

Just because you don't agree with the argument doesn't make it any the less valid. I assume I could be wrong that there are millions of farm animals at any one time. If farming was banned, there wouldn't be millions of farm animals out there. Perhaps a few thousand. We may be a nation of home owners but we aren't a nation of people with half an arce or more that it would take to keep a cow. Are you seriously suggesting that people living in two-bed terrace would be keeping a cow in their little patch of greenery?
I eat meat, I see nothing wrong with eating meat. Some animals eat other animals to survive. We aren't bred to totally vegetarian. As a nation we eat too much unhealthy food and not enough veg. I eat meat because I don't have the time or energy that it would take to be vegan. I say vegan because I couldn't be a lacto-vegetarian/vegetarian allegic to dairy products and allegic to nuts, fish. I would have to plan my diet properly if I was going to miss out those two huge food groups to ensure that I was getting the correct amount of nutrients.
Anyway the reason I came in here was to ask - does anyway have any good recipes for Buckwheat? I seem to have an awful lot of the stuff. It's just as bland as cous cous, I was wondering if I could use it to make burgers or something.0 -
